Three-Dimensional NLS-Graphy in Renal Cancer Staging
This study evaluated the use of 3D NLS-graphy and spectral-entropic analysis (SEA) in determining the stage and regional spread of renal cancer in 335 patients undergoing pre-surgical assessment.
NLS imaging identified important indicators of tumor extension, including invasion of the renal collecting system, involvement of the kidney capsule and surrounding fat, vascular invasion, and regional metastases.
Signs of local tumor spread became more common as tumor size increased, although NLS-ultramicroscanning reportedly detected regional extension even in tumors smaller than 10 mm.
Three-dimensional imaging helped distinguish between early-stage (T1) disease and more advanced stages (T3), influencing decisions between nephron-sparing surgery and radical nephrectomy.
NLS-ultramicroangiography was used to identify tumor thrombus formation within the renal vein or inferior vena cava, findings considered crucial for surgical planning.
The authors concluded that 3D NLS combined with SEA may enhance preoperative evaluation of renal tumors by assessing local invasion, vascular involvement, and aiding differential diagnosis between benign and malignant lesions.
