A 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring is described in this study as an imaging approach for evaluating cervical carcinoma and monitoring changes during and after treatment. The study focused on the use of three-dimensional non-linear scanning (NLS), ultramicroscanning, and spectral-entropic analysis (SEA) to evaluate tumor characteristics and treatment response.
Cervix carcinoma is an important oncological condition affecting women of reproductive and socially active age. According to the study, surgical intervention and radiation therapy have traditionally played major roles in treatment, while combined and integrated treatment approaches have also been developed.
The objective of the study was to determine the possibilities of a 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring, including the use of ultramicroscanning and SEA to evaluate treatment efficiency.
3D NLS Study for Cervix Carcinoma Treatment Monitoring
Modern visualization methods used in the evaluation of cervical carcinoma include ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The study describes three-dimensional NLS diagnostics as an additional imaging approach.
According to the reported study, a 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring can be used for evaluation of the cervical tumor and for monitoring changes during treatment.
The described NLS approach was used to evaluate:
- The structure of the uterine cervix
- The size and character of the tumor
- Tumor extension into the uterine body
- Ovarian involvement
- Urinary bladder involvement
- Parametrial tissue
- Vascular structures
- Liver involvement
- Retroperitoneal lymph nodes
- Changes occurring during and after treatment
The study also described the use of spectral-entropic analysis to compare tumor spectra with reference processes.
3D NLS Diagnostics in Cervix Carcinoma
The reported 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring was performed using Metatron-4025 systems equipped with a 4.9 GHz high-frequency sensor and Metapathia GR Clinical professional software.
The software was described as providing three-dimensional visualization and evaluation of microscans.
The investigation consisted of several stages.
First, patients underwent transabdominal ultrasound examination of the small pelvic organs. The urinary bladder was naturally filled before the examination, and possible urinary bladder invasion was evaluated.
At the second stage, a three-dimensional NLS examination of the small pelvic organs was performed.
The 3D NLS examination was used to identify cervical lesions and evaluate the endocervix. Lateral virtual cross-sections provided views of the anterior and posterior uterine walls, while frontal cross-sections provided information about the left and right sides of the uterus and parametrial tissue.
3D NLS Visualization of Cervical Tumors
Three-dimensional NLS angiography was used in the study to visualize the vascular structures of the uterine cervix.
Simultaneous three-dimensional visualization of the organ was used to evaluate the volume of the tumorous lesion.
This aspect of the 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring allowed the investigators to assess the tumor in a three-dimensional format rather than relying only on individual two-dimensional sections.
Spectral-entropic analysis was applied at the same time to further characterize the pathological process.
According to the study, SEA was used to evaluate the similarity between the tumor spectrum and reference processes, providing additional information for the reported pathomorphological assessment.
Spectral-Entropic Analysis in Cervix Carcinoma
Spectral-entropic analysis was an important component of the reported 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring.
SEA was applied to the tumor and other examined areas to evaluate spectral characteristics and their similarity to reference processes.
The study described SEA as a method that could help characterize the pathological changes of the uterine cervix and evaluate changes during treatment.
The combined application of 3D NLS, ultramicroscanning, and SEA was therefore used to assess tumor size, structure, vascularization, and changes associated with treatment.
NLS Evaluation of Metastatic Disease
At the third stage of the examination, NLS study and SEA were performed on the liver and retroperitoneal space.
The purpose was to evaluate possible distant metastatic involvement and changes in retroperitoneal lymph nodes.
The 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring was therefore not limited to the uterine cervix. The examination protocol also included evaluation of selected abdominal and retroperitoneal structures.
The NLS examination protocol was performed at several treatment-related time points:
- Before treatment
- During treatment
- After treatment
- Six months after treatment
This protocol allowed the investigators to compare NLS findings at different stages of treatment.
Patients Included in the Study
A total of 51 patients with cervix carcinoma were included in the study.
The patients had stage II or stage III disease and were treated at the Omsk Regional Oncologic Dispensary.
The age of the patients ranged from 26 to 79 years, with an average age of 49.7 years.
All cases of cervix carcinoma included in the study were morphologically verified.
Squamous cell carcinoma of different differentiation levels accounted for 92% of cases, while adenocarcinoma was identified in the remaining patients.
Regarding disease stage, 21.6% of patients had stage II disease and 78.4% had stage III disease.
Cervix Carcinoma Tumor Growth Patterns
The study also evaluated the growth patterns of cervix carcinoma.
A combined growth pattern was reported in 37% of patients. An endophytic growth pattern was identified in 29.6%, while an exophytic growth pattern was reported in 31.4%.
An infiltrative-ulcerous form was reported in 2% of patients.
The study also described different patterns of extra-organ tumor spread.
A vaginal-parametric pattern was detected in 68% of patients, a vaginal-parametric-utricular pattern in 10%, and a parametric pattern in 22%.
NLS Findings Before Treatment
Before treatment, the 3D NLS study for cervix carcinoma treatment monitoring identified structural changes in the uterine cervix.
The reported NLS findings included hypochromogenic lesions of different shapes and sizes without clearly defined contours and/or smaller roundish hyperchromogenic inclusions.
The contours of the uterine cervix were generally described as indistinct, uneven, and irregular.
The study also reported moderate a
